MA Photography

I recently finally completed my MA Photography submission and am delighted to have just been awarded my MA by De Montfort University, Leicester. The MA Photography Final Project focussed on the ongoing tradition and history of jump racing. My submission included a series of mounted images taken over two years at Cheltenham racecourse, the home of jump racing. These images were accompanied by a book of images taken in the Valley of the Racehorse, Lambourn. The mounted images had a rich black and white finish to echo the ongoing history. The anonymity in the images, where the horses and jockeys

Autumn Outdoor Photography

Keats called this time of year the `season of mists and mellow fruitfulness.’ Whilst we have only had a few mists and fogs so far, the lack of the usual October strong winds means that many leaves are still on the trees. As the days shorten and the trees close down their food production systems, the reduction in the chlorophyll in the leaves is leading to the beautiful colours this Autumn. The reds, ambers and yellows are due to the chemicals Carotenoids, Flavonoids and Anthcyanins. A recent study suggested that the red colour is intended to stop aphids attacking certain

Newmarket Racecourse

Always a pleasure to work at Newmarket Racecourse for the Jockey Club, this time capturing the atmosphere of the Dubai Future Champions both in the Parade Ring and also behind the scenes. 2016 is the 350th anniversary of racing and history in the area. The Festival offers over two million pounds in prize money and combines world class two year olds with premier older age contests. A fitting highlight as the season here draws to a close. A great day and a wonderful atmosphere.

Jockey Club Front Cover

I was delighted to have my image on the front cover of the Jockey Club’s Kalendar magazine last season. It was a real surprise therefore to find that one of my images had made the front cover again, and so appears on the front of the Kalendar magazine for the 2016/17 jump season. The image, a close-up of a horse and jockey after a race, with the steam from the horse just visible in the slightly chill March air was taken at the Cheltenham Festival earlier this year. Looking forward to working for the Jockey Club again tomorrow, capturing the

Outdoor photography

Autumn is slowly approaching and the flower borders are beginning to show signs of wear and tear, although the dahlias are still putting on an amazing show. It was good to take a few hours off and go for a wander with the camera for some outdoor photography in the borders of Calke Abbey. The wild flower borders have put on an ever changing display this season and are slowly declining, however they are still a riot of colour, if a little faded at the edges. Many years ago film cameras took steps to avoid the mistake of multiple exposures

Cheltenham Racecourse Photography and MA

It has been a pleasure to work at Cheltenham racecourse over the past two seasons. Alongside my day to day commissions I have been studying for an MA in Photography and hope to finish this Autumn. Images from Cheltenham form a substantial part of my Final Project submission which focuses on the ongoing, traditional way of life underlying the word of horse racing. I am now at the editing and write-up stage, perhaps the most difficult part, and these are some of the images which might well be included in the final cut. As well as images form Cheltenham, there

Outdoor Photography Shoot

A few images from an outdoor photography shoot last weekend at Staunton Harold. A great shoot. Luca and Francesca were happy to get fully involved in the shoot, and as you will see, are also very photogenic! Whilst the shoot was to be all about the two of them, Clare also took part in a few of the shots which was great. The Staunton Harold Estate makes a lovely backdrop for a shoot at all times of year, and especially on a warm Saturday afternoon in early May.

Outdoor Family Photography – Thrumpton Hall

An outdoor family photography shoot at the beautiful Thrumpton Hall. The Spring sunshine was out for a visit to Thrumpton Hall for a photography shoot with Rachael and Robert and three year old Laura and Iris who turned one this week. Rachael and Robert chose Thrumpton Hall because it was where they held their wedding reception a few years ago. The landscaped gardens extend to some two acres and include an Elizabethan Knot Garden, lake and rose garden, as well as some beautiful more informal areas. Thrumpton Hall is the home of Miranda Seymour, whose great uncle is Lord Byron, the
